PETER OBI PLEDGES TO PAY NECO FEES FOR 148 INMATES IN ANAMBRA CORRECTIONAL CENTRES
Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has committed to settle the National Examinations Council (NECO) registration fees for 148 inmates across correctional facilities in Anambra State.
The pledge was made on Sunday when Obi received a delegation of inmate representatives from Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, and Aguata correctional centres.
According to the former governor, the inmates risked being excluded from completing their ongoing NECO examinations because outstanding fees had not been paid within the deadline set by the examination body.
He explained that NECO had granted approval for the inmates to sit for the exams, subject to full payment of the registration fees, but lack of funds had left many unable to progress beyond the initial stages.
Obi described education as a fundamental tool for rehabilitation and reintegration, stressing that no one should be denied the opportunity to improve themselves, even while serving a sentence. The payment, he said, would be made immediately to ensure all 148 candidates can complete their examinations without further interruption.
