US House Passes Trump-Backed Tax and Spending Bill, Faces Senate Hurdl
Washington D.C. – May 21, 2025
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a sweeping tax and spending package championed by President Donald Trump, marking a significant legislative milestone for the administration. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces uncertain prospects amid bipartisan concerns over its fiscal impact.
Described by Trump as a “big, beautiful bill,” the legislation proposes an extension of tax cuts introduced during his first term, eliminates federal taxes on service industry tips, and significantly boosts military and border security spending.
House Speaker Mike Johnson hailed the passage as “a turning point in American history,” adding that the bill “prioritizes American workers, national defense, and economic freedom.”
However, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has warned that the bill could add approximately $2.3 trillion to the U.S. national debt over the next decade—a projection that has alarmed fiscal conservatives and centrist lawmakers.
Democrats have criticised the legislation as fiscally reckless and skewed in favour of wealthy Americans and corporations. Some Republican senators have also expressed unease about the long-term debt implications and are calling for revisions before considering passage.
The Senate vote is expected in the coming weeks and could shape the trajectory of Trump’s renewed presidency as he seeks to cement his economic legacy.
