The national assembly election petition tribunal sitting in Umuahia has upheld the election of Mao Ohuabunwa of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, as senator representing Abia north senatorial zone.
The candidate of the Progressives Peoples’ Alliance, in the March 5 2016 re-run, Orji Uzor Kalu had challenged the election of Ohuabunwa and wanted the tribunal to declare him winner of the election.
Dismissing the petition, in his over eight hours judgment, the Tribunal chairman, Justice James Abundaga said that Kalu failed to prove allegations of malpractice beyond reasonable doubt.

He also described some of the paragraphs in the petition as vague and discredited the witnesses, including the forensic expert called by the petitioner as well as the testimony of the principal witness.

In a swift reaction, Kalu rejected the judgment and said he would appeal against it.

Mao Ohuabunwa’s counsel, Mr. Mike Onyeka, expressed joy with the judgment .saying that the Tribunal decided the matter on merit.
