The Nigerian Army Headquarters has confirmed the death of its Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPs), Maj.-Gen. Yushau Abubakar, in an auto crash along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman.

He said the accident occurred on Tuesday while the late senior officer was travelling in a vehicle with the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Nigerian Army 3 Division, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Aliyu.

Usman said the GOC was in stable condition and responding to treatment in a hospital.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar was the immediate past Theatre Commander of the North-East counter-insurgency operation code-named `Operation Lafiya Dole’.

NAN recalls that one of the recent official engagements of the senior officer was at the inauguration of the Nigerian Army Motorbike Battalion in Damboa, Borno. (NAN)
