The Federal Government has attributed the drop in power generation to gas pipeline damage by unscrupulous elements in some parts of the country.

The acting Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Dr. Anthony Akah, said this on Tuesday while signing Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, with the Consumer Protection Council, CPC.

According to him incessant vandalism on the gas pipelines has led to drastic reduction in peak power supply through the national grid from over 5,000 megawatts to less than 2,800 megawatts.

As he put it, “The increasing spate of vandalism of electrical installation, electricity theft and other unwholesome acts by electricity consumers has reduced the capacity of the government to provide enough quantity of power for members of the public.”

Calling on CPC for better collaboration, Akah said that such partnership needed to be strengthened as NERC has perfected plan to put electricity distribution companies under commitment to fulfil their service level agreements.

Commenting, the Director General of CPC, Mrs. Modupe Atoki lamented that consumers suffered a lot as she urged NERC to renew its effort to protect electricity consumers from abuse of their rights.
