Tinubu Reconstitutes NERC Board, Tasks New Leadership on Power Sector Transformation
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially reconstituted the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), following the successful confirmation of the nominees by the Senate on December 16. The move marks a strategic step in the administration’s efforts to stabilize and modernize the nation’s energy landscape.
Leading the newly reconstituted board is Dr. Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, who steps into the role of Chairman. Dr. Oseni is a veteran of the commission, having begun his service as a Commissioner in 2017 before rising to the position of Vice Chairman. His tenure as Chairman, which officially commenced on December 1, 2025, is set to continue until the completion of his ten-year service period, as stipulated by the Electricity Act of 2023.
Supporting him in the leadership hierarchy is Dr. Yusuf Ali, who has been designated as the new Vice Chairman. Dr. Ali, who joined the commission in February 2022, assumed his new responsibilities at the start of December and will serve in this capacity through the remainder of his first term.
The board also features a mix of seasoned hands and fresh expertise. Returning for their second terms as Commissioners are Mr. Nathan Rogers Shatti and Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, both of whom have been with the commission since early 2017, along with Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, who was first appointed in 2020. They are joined by Dr. Chidi Ike, currently serving his first term, and the newly appointed Dr. Fouad Animashaun. Dr. Animashaun, an energy economist, brings significant sub-national regulatory experience to the federal level, having recently served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu urged the board members to be decisive in their duties. He charged the team to deepen and consolidate the ongoing reforms within the Nigerian power sector, emphasizing that their actions must strictly align with the legal framework provided by the Electricity Act of 2023 to ensure a more efficient and reliable energy market for all Nigerians.
