ByABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has congratulated His Holiness Leo XIV on his election as the new Pope, describing the Conclave’s selection of American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as an inspired choice for a world in need of renewed faith and hope.
In a statement on Thursday, Tinubu celebrated with millions of Nigerian Catholics and emphasized the importance of the Pontiff’s uplifting message, which he said resonates globally and aligns with aspirations for peace and unity across nations.
The President reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong diplomatic and spiritual ties with the Holy See, commending the Catholic Church for its vital role in promoting peace, advancing education, providing healthcare, and contributing to infrastructure development across the country.
He also acknowledged recent collaborations between Nigeria and the Vatican, especially in the areas of technology and human capacity development, and expressed optimism that these partnerships would grow stronger under Pope Leo XIV’s leadership.
Tinubu concluded his message by praying for the new Pope’s health, wisdom, and divine guidance as he leads the Catholic Church and inspires compassion, charity, and justice around the world.
Pope Leo XIV is the first American to be elected pontiff, and succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this year
