Tinubu Brokers Peace Talks to Resolve Rivers Political Crisis
ABUJA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday night hosted a high-level reconciliation meeting at the Presidential Villa, aimed at resolving the protracted political crisis in Rivers State.
Those in attendance included Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and several other key political actors from the state.
The closed-door meeting marks a renewed effort by the President to foster unity and end months of political tension that have gripped Rivers State since late 2023.
While the details of the deliberations were not immediately disclosed, presidential aides said the session was “frank and forward-looking,” with all parties pledging to work toward a peaceful resolution.
The Rivers political crisis has seen deepening divisions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor Wike, culminating in a split in the House of Assembly and governance disruptions in the state.
Contrary to some earlier reports, President Tinubu did not suspend the governor, his deputy, or state lawmakers, nor was an emergency rule formally declared in March. However, the National Assembly had temporarily stepped in to handle legislative duties following internal turmoil in the state assembly.
Thursday’s meeting is viewed as a significant step in efforts to restore political stability and effective governance in Rivers State.
