The 2014 FIFA World Cup is less than a week away, so fans are gearing up for the massive, wold-wide sporting event.
Not much of the sport has change in recent years, but fans now have ability to connect with their favorite players, teams and each other through social media, especially Twitter.
Many players of the sport have gathered millions of their own followers, such as Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo  , who is the most followed FIFA World Cup player on Twitter with a cool 26.5 million followers. Despite having under 2,000 tweets, Ronaldo dominates the social media game with more than double the amount of followers as the second most-followed player, Neymar Júnior  from Brazil who has tweeted more than 40,000 times.
England's striker Wayne Rooney  comes in third with 8.8 million followers, but the remaining majority of the Top 10 is controlled by Spain, a favorite to win this year's title and Brazil, and can potentially be the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win the cup twice in a row.
The following graph, from statistics company Statista shows the the most-followed FIFA World Cup players on Twitter.
