SSANU, NASU Reject FG’s ₦50bn Disbursement Formula, Call it ‘Unjus’
The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions (NASU) has outrightly rejected the distribution formula adopted by the Federal Government for the disbursement of ₦50 billion meant for university-based unions.
In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, the unions described the sharing formula as “unjust, unfair, and provocative,” expressing deep dissatisfaction that 80% of the total funds had been allocated solely to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), while the remaining 20% was left to be shared among SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The ₦50 billion was approved by the Federal Government as part of efforts to address lingering issues around earned allowances and outstanding entitlements across Nigeria’s public universities.
SSANU and NASU argued that the disbursement process was neither transparent nor reflective of the critical contributions of non-academic staff to university operations.
“This formula amounts to outright marginalisation,” the statement read. “We reject it in totality and demand an immediate review that reflects equity and respect for all university workers.”
The unions further warned that the decision could threaten industrial harmony in the university system, especially if the government fails to engage all stakeholders in a more inclusive dialogue.
The Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have not yet commented on the controversy as of press time.
This development comes as Nigerian universities continue to struggle with recurring labour disputes, funding gaps, and infrastructural deficits, prompting fresh calls for reforms in how tertiary education is managed and financed in the country.
