Manchester City pair Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have both tested positive for Covid-19, the club have confirmed.

Both Mahrez and Laporte have not been showing symptoms are will now self-isolate.

City’s first game of the Premier League campaign is on September 21 at Wolves, a week later than the majority of the league due to their Champions League commitments in August.

The club begin the defence of their EFL Cup win in the same week, facing either Bournemouth or Crystal Palace in the third round. The pair’s availability for both games is now in doubt.

A club statement read: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have tested positive for Covid-19

“Both players are currently observing a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. Neither is displaying symptoms of the virus.

“Everyone at the Club wishes Riyad and Aymeric a speedy recovery ahead of their return to training and the new season.”

Mahrez tweeted soon after the news was confirmed, allay any fears over his health.

He wrote: “Thank you for all the nice messages, I’m good. Stay safe everyone take care of you.”
