SENATE TO HOLD EXECUTIVE BRIEFING ON DECEMBER 25 AIR STRIKES IN SOKOTO

The Senate has announced plans to hold an executive briefing on the December 25 United States air strikes targeting terrorist locations in Sokoto State, following concerns raised over the National Assembly’s alleged exclusion from pre-operation consultations.

The issue was brought to the floor during plenary under Order 42 (Matters of Privilege) by Senator Abdul Ningi, an opposition lawmaker representing Bauchi Central. Senator Ningi argued that the air strikes constituted an infringement on Nigeria’s territorial integrity and should not have been carried out without legislative involvement.

He maintained that the National Assembly, which is constitutionally empowered to play an oversight role in matters of national security and foreign military engagements, was not consulted prior to the operation.

According to him, such actions undermine the legislature’s authority and raise serious constitutional and sovereignty concerns.
The planned executive briefing is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the air strikes and address lawmakers’ concerns over due process and legislative oversight.
