Senate Confirms Appointment of Five INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as nominated by President Bola Tinubu in March 2025.

The confirmation followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters during plenary. Chairman of the committee, Senator Simon Lalong, recommended the nominees for confirmation, stating that they all successfully passed the screening exercise.

The newly confirmed RECs are:

Umar Yusuf Garba – Kano State

Sa’ad Umar Idris – Bauchi State

Chukwuemeka C. Ibeziako – Anambra State

Umar Mukhtar – Borno State

Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem – Bayelsa State

Their confirmation comes ahead of a crucial electoral cycle, as INEC prepares for several off-cycle gubernatorial elections and broader electoral reforms.
