SENATE APPROVES DEPLOYMENT OF NIGERIAN TROOPS TO BENIN REPUBLIC
The Nigerian Senate has unanimously approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to the Republic of Benin to help restore calm and stability following last weekend’s attempted military coup.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the approval on Tuesday during plenary, after the upper chamber considered the President’s letter in the Committee of the Whole, in line with Section 5(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Lawmakers voted without dissent to grant parliamentary authorisation for the limited regional security and stabilisation mission.
Akpabio described the resolution as timely, emphasising that instability in any neighbouring country poses a direct threat to Nigeria and the wider West African region.
With the Senate’s endorsement, the Nigerian Armed Forces can now provide the requested exceptional air support and peacekeeping assistance to the government of President Patrice Talon under the ECOWAS framework.
