Some family members of slain African American, George Floyd have attended a prayer service Sunday night, hours before opening statements of the murder trial of the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin charged in his death began.
While the prayer service night occurred, several dozen attendees congregated in the benches at Greater Friendship Missionary Church including National civil rights.
Floyd was killed during an arrest in the after a store clerk alleged he had passed a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis.
Derek Chauvin, one of four police officers who arrived on the scene, knelt on Floyd’s neck for a period initially reported to be 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
Preachers played their role, worship sessions occurred and the choir sang. Members of George Floyd’s family were joined by the Reverend Al Sharpton and Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney who also represents the Floyd family.
The most important aspect of all the activities was the call for justice in George Floyd’s death. This morrors the words spoken by leaders during a protest earlier Sunday in downtown Minneapolis.
