RSIEC Fixes August 30 for Fresh LGA Elections in Rivers State
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date—August 30, 2025—for the conduct of local government elections across the state.
This decision was disclosed during a general stakeholders’ meeting held at the RSIEC headquarters in Port Harcourt on Thursday. The meeting had in attendance representatives of political parties, traditional rulers, religious organisations, and civil society groups.
The new date replaces the earlier August 9 schedule set by the sacked RSIEC chairman, which had caused controversy amid the ongoing political tussle in the state.
RSIEC officials at the meeting assured stakeholders of a free, fair, and transparent electoral process, noting that the commission is working with relevant agencies to ensure security and credibility.
Political watchers believe the new schedule may further intensify political activities in Rivers State as parties gear up to field candidates across the 23 local government areas.
