Reforms Boost Nigeria’s Health Sector, Says Finance Minister
Nigeria’s health sector is making significant strides, driven by the Federal Government’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms, the Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, has said.
Speaking at the Health Works Leaders Coalition roundtable on the sidelines of the 2025 World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington D.C., Dr. Uzoka-Anite said that despite persistent challenges, the sector has seen measurable improvements, particularly in funding and healthcare delivery strategies.
The Minister revealed that allocations to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare rose by nearly 60% in the 2025 budget, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and services.
Dr. Uzoka-Anite highlighted key initiatives aimed at boosting sector financing and value, including:
• Excise taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages, with revenues directed to Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
• Zero-rating of medical equipment and drugs for VAT purposes, reducing costs for essential healthcare commodities.
• Securing concessionary financing through the HOPE operation to support healthcare projects.
The Minister also called for a national compact to align fiscal resources with national priorities, emphasizing collaboration as essential for sustainable growth in the health sector. She praised the World Bank for selecting Nigeria as a priority country to showcase its UHC COMPACT and lead efforts under the Africa Initiative for Access to Medicines and Local Manufacturing (AIM 2030).
Dr. Uzoka-Anite lauded Professor Ali Pate, Minister of Health, and other stakeholders for their collaborative work, describing these achievements as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes healthcare and citizens’ well-being.
Concluding her remarks, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to sustainable growth, equitable development, and improving the lives of Nigerians, urging continued partnerships to drive productivity and economic prosperity.
This announcement underscores Nigeria’s determination to strengthen its healthcare system while leveraging macroeconomic reforms to enhance national development.
