President Tinubu Urges New Defence Doctrine for Africa

President Bola Tinubu has called for a new, unified defence strategy to combat terrorism, cybercrime, and other security threats across Africa. Speaking at the first-ever African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit, the President emphasized that these challenges do not respect borders, so the response must also be collective. He urged military leaders to create a fresh doctrine based on shared intelligence, trust, and coordinated action.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu stressed the need for a permanent African Chiefs of Defence Staff Forum. He said this platform would allow military chiefs to maintain continuous dialogue, operational coordination, and strategic foresight. The President also highlighted the importance of investing in cyber defense, artificial intelligence, and homegrown military technology to effectively address modern threats.

The President described the summit not just as a meeting of military leaders but as a “convocation of Africa’s guardians.” He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to being a good neighbor and a strong partner in the struggle for peace and stability. He urged the leaders to ensure the summit’s outcomes are institutionalized to build a resilient and secure future for the continent.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, echoed the President’s sentiments, stating that the host nation is deeply committed to continental defense integration. He charged his fellow military leaders to lead the way in organizing forces and investing in technology. The event, which was attended by military leaders, diplomats, and other officials, was praised as a historic step toward a more unified African security architecture.
