President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the approval of the Senate to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin.

The request was conveyed in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.

According to the letter, the request is made pursuant to Section 5, Subsection 5, Part 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the President to seek legislative consent before the deployment of armed forces outside the country.

Further details on the scope, purpose, and duration of the proposed deployment are expected as lawmakers deliberate on the request.
