President Tinubu Forms High-Powered Committee for Buhari’s State Funeral

In a move reflecting the nation’s profound grief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the formation of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to oversee the state funeral arrangements for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The announcement was made today, Monday, July 14, 2025, by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The high-powered committee, tasked with planning and coordinating a “befitting state burial” for the elder statesman, will be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
The extensive list of committee members underscores the comprehensive nature of the planned funeral. It includes key figures from various government ministries and security agencies, such as:

* Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy

* Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning

* Honourable Minister of Defence

* Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation

* Honourable Minister of Works

* Honourable Minister of Interior

* Honourable Minister of FCT

* Minister of Housing and Urban Development

* Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare

* Honourable Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy

* National Security Adviser

* Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination

* Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters

* Inspector General of Police

* Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS)

* Chief of Defence Staff

The Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), will serve as the Secretariat for this crucial committee.

In a further directive to honor the late President Buhari, President Tinubu has instructed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at the entrances of their respective offices. This allows members of the public to pay their respects to the former leader.

Additionally, two central condolence registers will be made available for the diplomatic community and the general public: one at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and another at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, both located in Abuja.

The nation awaits further briefings on the state funeral arrangements as the committee commences its work.
