Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, one of the most senior figures in the Catholic Church, is conducting the funeral service.
The 91-year-old Cardinal honours Pope Francis’ ability to lead with “an open heart towards everyone” in his sermon, describing him as a “pope among the people.”
Dozens of leaders and dignitaries – including Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Prince William – have joined an estimated 200,000 mourners, with 50,000 inside St Peter’s Square itself

Meanwhile, on the other side of Rome, people from around the world are already starting to queue at the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, where the late pontiff will be interred after today’s funeral.
