The first ever female brigadier general Mahawa Sylla has emerged in Guinean.

Reports from BBC reveals that president Alpha Condé has appointed Mahawa Sylla through a promotion on 8 March which was the International Women’s Day.

After this feat, President Condé during the announcement, promised to promote women empowerment. He said, “Women come first in Guinea”.

In a congratulatory tweet from a twitter user, Gen Sylla tweeted: ‘’Félicitations pour votre élévation en grade général Mahawa Sylla’’

On Gen Sylla’s profile, according to Vision Guinee news website, she studied at the Command and Staff College in China and obtained a dploma in 2014,

In late 2017, she was appointed to the position of Deputy Secretary General of the National Defence Council.

Other places she worked was the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI).

Concerning the reasons she was promoted, Guinea’s directorate of information and public relations of the armed forces said Gen Sylla was promoted based on proposals given by the national defence ministry.
