The House of Representatives in the Committee of the whole on Tuesday approved and adopted the report of the adhoc committee on a bill for an act to repeal the National Minimum wage act to prescribe a National Minimum wage for workers.
The adhoc Committee recommended and adopted the sum of N30, 000 minimum wage.
The speaker, Yakubu Dogara officially announced his defection to the PDP before adjourning plenary till the 19th of February.
The House resolved in the Committee of the Whole to consider the report with the Speaker of the House presiding over the session. It resumed with the synopsis of the bill.
According to the Chairman of the Committee, the bill does not cover employers whose staff strength are below 25.
Raising a point of order, the house majority leader was of the opinion that the bill should take effect six months after assent but on the contrary the lawmakers moved that the bill should take immediate effect as soon as the president signs it into law.
But the speaker holds a different opinion. He noted that with the absence of appropriation, the bill however cannot be implemented.
To save the House from further debate, the Chairman House Committee on Rules and Business moved for an Amendment to include that the bill become effective from the date it is assented to
The bill passed third reading on the floor. The House is to harmonize with its counterpart in the senate for onward transmission to the president for assent.
Meanwhile in a another development, the Speaker of the House officially announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party and adjourned plenary till the 19th of February.
