Abuja, Nigeria — A protest broke out on Monday at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wadata Plaza, Abuja, as supporters of a faction loyal to the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Mohammed Abdulrahman, stormed the premises demanding control of the party headquarters.
Chanting solidarity songs, the protesters called on members of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to vacate the secretariat immediately.
The development follows the deepening leadership crisis within the opposition party after Abdulrahman was declared Acting National Chairman last week, amid the suspension of the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, for one month.
The protesters accused the Damagum-led NWC of mismanaging party affairs and pledged loyalty to Abdulrahman’s faction.
Security operatives were deployed around the party headquarters to prevent a breakdown of law and order as both factions continue to lay claim to the leadership of the PDP.
