A new compliance report has revealed that major technology companies, including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, have removed nearly 59 million pieces of content in an effort to comply with Nigeria’s Code of Practice for online safety.
The report also noted that more than 13.5 million accounts have been closed and over 754,000 user complaints have been registered.
The data was released by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in a report signed by its Director of Corporate Communications, Hadiza Umar.
The report commended the tech giants for their continued adherence to the Code of Practice, which provides clear guidelines for managing harmful content and promoting user safety.
NITDA described the reports as a significant step towards fostering a safer digital environment and noted that the platforms’ efforts also demonstrate their commitment to fulfilling their tax obligations in Nigeria.
The agency concluded by stating it remains committed to working with all stakeholders to further strengthen user safety and promote trust in the country’s digital ecosystem.
