The global spread of the Omicron variant of COVID has prompted the World Health Organization to caution people concerning some of their holiday plans.

The renowned health organisation, through its head, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, specifically said people around the world should protect public health.

Considering the severity of the situation, Ghebreyesus said, “An event cancelled is better than a life cancelled,”

adding that “difficult decisions” must be made.

Meanwhile, imposing travel curbs is one of the numerous measures that has been put in place by a number of countries, amidst acting to try to halt the spread of the variant.

One part of the world that the deadly virus has dominated is the US. At the moment, Omicron accounts for 73% of new infections.

So far, the concerns of President Joe Biden have been made public, even though the White House has no plan on “locking the country down.” Another bold step that will be taken by Biden is an expected address the nation on Tuesday.

In the view of infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Christmas travel would increase the spread of Omicron even among the fully vaccinated.
