Obi Commends JAMB Registrar Over UTME Glitch Admission, Urges Prevention of Future Error

Abuja, Nigeria – May 15, 2025

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has commended the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, for openly acknowledging the technical glitches that affected the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Speaking in reaction to Oloyede’s emotional admission during a press briefing in Abuja, Obi praised the JAMB Registrar for his transparency and courage in addressing the concerns of millions of candidates and parents.

“In a nation where accountability is rare, the Registrar’s acknowledgment is commendable,” Obi stated. “However, there must be a concerted effort to ensure such errors do not occur again.”

Oloyede had, during the briefing, revealed that “one or two errors” had impacted the examination outcomes, which recorded an unusually low performance rate—only 0.63% of candidates scored above 300 out of 400.

Obi emphasized the importance of preserving the credibility of national examinations, urging JAMB to strengthen its systems to restore public confidence.

“This examination determines the future of millions of young Nigerians. There is no room for repeated lapses,” he said.

The 2025 UTME witnessed participation from nearly two million candidates across Nigeria, with widespread concern over technical hitches and scoring anomalies. Lawmakers and civil society groups have since called for reforms and expanded access to reliable Computer-Based Test centres nationwide.
