Nigeria’s Electricity Supply Drops After Power Grid Collapses Again

Power generation in Nigeria has crashed from a peak of 3,594.60 megawatts at midnight to a low of 42.7MW by midday after Nigeria’s national grid collapsed again on Tuesday.

Sources have disclosed that subsequently, at noon, only the Delta Power plant was operational on the grid, contributing 41MW, while Afam generated 1.7MW.

While attributing to a nationwide system collapse, the grid failure was particularly impactful on the commercial hub of Lagos, where power supply was lost at 11:32 am.

Unfortunately, the nation went into total darkness for extended periods, after the incident occurred five days ago. Making it the third grid collapse in less than one month.

On the consequences of the grid collapse, it has led to a nationwide blackout denying many Nigerians, access to electricity.

So far, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has not to issued any statement explaining the cause of this latest collapse, but there are speculations that it has happened as a result of infrastructure limitations, challenges in gas supply, and constraints within the transmission system.

However, the country is estimated to suffer substantial financial losses annually due to power interruptions as the issue has affected the growth of country’s economic and developmental progress.

Nigerians have also been affected by the situation because it has affected their productivity in different sectors, especially business activities.
