Nigerian teenager table tennis players, Usman Okanlawon and Sadiat Akeem, have qualified for the International Table Tennis Federation World Hopes Challenge in Muscat, Oman.

The ITTF World Hopes Challenge will be staged at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in the capital city of Muscat from August 1 to 7.

The duo Usman Okanlawon and Sadiat Akeem made the cut to the global tournament after reaching the final of the ITTF African Hopes Challenge held in Kinshasa, Congo DRC.

The Nigerian teenagers competed against players from Egypt, Tunisia, Rwanda, Uganda, Congo Brazzaville and host – Congo DRC, with the top two players in the U12 & U-15 events berthing at the world championship in Oman.

Okanlawon lost 3-2 to Egypt’s Yassine Yasser in the boys’ U-12 event, while Akeem who also competed in the girls’ U-12 defeated Egypt’s Hagar Ashraf Shahata to emerge champions.

Also, Taiwo Mati showed his class emerging winner in the boys cadet singles event at the just concluded ITTF World Junior Circuit held in Agadiro.

The 2019 Ghana Junior Circuit champion defeated Slovakia’s Jakub Goldir, in four sets (13-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8).

Mati, also paired Hungary’s Balazs Lei to claim cadet boys’ doubles gold and finishing in top four in the junior boys’ singles.
