Nigeria Firmly Opposes Religious Persecution, Says Tinubu, Rejects Intolerance Label

The Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has strongly rejected the characterization of Nigeria as a religiously intolerant nation, stating that such a label does not reflect the country’s national reality.

In a statement signed by the President, the government emphasized that Nigeria remains a robust democracy grounded in the constitutional guarantees of religious liberty and tolerance for all citizens.

President Tinubu highlighted the consistent efforts of his administration to address security concerns, noting that these challenges affect citizens across all faiths and regions.

“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” the statement read.

Since taking office in 2023, the administration has maintained open and active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders.

The President asserted that religious freedom and tolerance are a “core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so,” stressing that Nigeria firmly opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.

The administration affirmed its commitment to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on the protection of communities of all faiths within Nigeria.
