Nigeria Engages US, UAE Over Evolving Visa Policies

The Nigerian government is actively engaging with the United States and the United Arab Emirates to address recent adjustments to their visa policies affecting Nigerian citizens. President Bola Tinubu’s administration emphasized its commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with both nations while working to resolve concerns surrounding the new visa regulations.

The US government cited high rates of visa overstays by Nigerian nationals and the need for improved access to records as reasons for its policy changes. This adjustment is part of a routine global visa reciprocity review. In response, President Tinubu has directed Nigerian agencies to ensure full compliance with international obligations and enhance cooperation in authenticating citizens’ identities when seeking services abroad, urging Nigerians to respect the immigration laws of the host country.

Regarding the UAE, the Nigerian government noted it has not received formal communication about a revised visa policy for transit visas. However, observations suggest a gradual and orderly issuance process is underway. President Tinubu expressed appreciation for the UAE’s continued cooperation and constructive engagement with Nigerian authorities on these matters.

President Tinubu reassured Nigerians that his administration is dedicated to ensuring citizens can travel, work, and live abroad with dignity, aligning with his 4-D Foreign Policy agenda. The government remains committed to deepening its valuable bilateral relations with both the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
