Miss Universe Nigeria’s National Costume Draws Global Applause in Thailand

Nigeria’s representative at the ongoing Miss Universe 2025 pageant in Thailand, Onyinyechi Basil, attracted widespread admiration after unveiling her national costume titled “AKWA NWANYI — The Frond of Womanhood.”

The elaborate costume, inspired by Igbo cultural heritage, celebrates the symbolism of the palm tree, revered across Igboland as a source of oil, wine, broom, mat, and life. The design draws from the palm frond—Akwa Nkwu—a motif associated with abundance, renewal, and continuity.

In the narrative accompanying the presentation, Akwa Nwanyi represents the spirit of womanhood, portrayed as the only daughter of her lineage, strengthened and adorned by the ever-living palm. The costume features raffia textures, a towering headpiece, cowries, a woven mat, and coral beads, blending earthy tones with vibrant highlights to depict fertility, grace, and generational wisdom.

According to the Miss Universe Nigeria team, the design pays tribute not just to one woman but to the collective strength of African women—“the nurturers, life-givers, and guardians of tomorrow.”

Basil’s performance on stage received enthusiastic applause from the international audience, with many praising the creativity, cultural depth and storytelling woven into the presentation.

The Miss Universe 2025 competition continues in Thailand, with contestants from around the world showcasing their national identities as they vie for the global crown.
