The Labour Party (LP) Caucus in the House of Representatives, through a statement by its Chairman, Honourable Adam Ogene, has rejected the attempted appointment of a new caucus leader by the former national chairman, Julius Abure.
This follows the caucus’s endorsement of the Supreme Court judgment and its support for the National Caretaker Committee (NCC). Abure had announced the removal of the current caucus leader, Honourable Afam Victor Ogene.
LP Representatives clarified that the caucus leader is elected by its members, not appointed. They highlighted Honourable Afam Victor Ogene’s democratic election by the caucus on May 6, 2023. The caucus asserted that only its members have the power to remove their leader, not an individual facing serious misconduct allegations.
Honourable Ogene stated that Abure’s actions, seemingly in response to the caucus’s support for the Supreme Court ruling against his continued tenure, are misguided. The caucus reaffirmed its position, anticipating strong support at the upcoming NEC meeting convened by party leaders Peter Obi and Alex Otti. The LP lawmakers also strongly refuted any comparison of the party to a fraudulent scheme, criticising Abure’s leadership over allegations of forgery and financial mismanagement.
