Leadership Tussle: PDP Secretariat Remains Sealed as Wike-Backed Group Fails to Resume
The National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja remained sealed on Monday, as the Nyesom Wike-backed caretaker committee failed to resume operations, contrary to earlier media reports.
The caretaker committee, backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had earlier announced plans to take over the party’s headquarters at Wadata Plaza. The disclosure was made last Thursday by the faction’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, following a closed-door meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Anyanwu had stated that the committee would resume at the secretariat on Monday.
However, a visit by Echonews to the premises showed no sign of reopening, as the complex remained shut and secured.
Security operatives were seen stationed in and around the building, which was sealed with heavy barbed wire, preventing access to party officials and members.
The continued closure reflects the deepening leadership crisis within the opposition party.
The dispute centres on a power struggle between two factions: one led by Tanimu Turaki and backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and the 13-member caretaker committee aligned with the Wike-backed group.
The unresolved tussle has further stalled administrative activities at the party’s national headquarters, raising concerns over internal cohesion ahead of future political engagements.
