Lagos to Begin Full Enforcement of Single-Use Plastics Ban July 1

Lagos – May 19, 2025

The Lagos State Government has announced that it will commence full enforcement of the ban on the use and distribution of Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) across the state beginning July 1, 2025.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the disclosure during a courtesy visit by the management team of Tetra Pak West Africa Limited at the Alausa Secretariat in Ikeja over the weekend.

Wahab stressed that the ban is part of the state’s broader commitment to sustainable environmental practices. He noted that the government has adopted a strategic and deliberate approach to phasing out SUPs, which include items such as plastic straws, cutlery, carrier bags, and polystyrene containers.

“We are taking concrete steps to ensure Lagos remains at the forefront of environmental sustainability in Africa,” Wahab stated. “This enforcement is crucial to mitigating pollution, safeguarding public health, and preserving our ecosystems.”

The commissioner also called for increased collaboration with private sector players and residents to ensure a seamless transition to reusable and eco-friendly alternatives.

The ban aligns with global environmental trends and Lagos’ ongoing campaign to reduce plastic waste, which has significantly contributed to flooding and environmental degradation in the state.
