Lagos Government Seals Alaba International Market

The Lagos state government has shut down Alaba international market along the Lagos Badagy Expressway, on Monday, October 23, 2023 due to environmental offences.

According to the Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab who disclosed this on  X, the reason for the closure of the market was due to poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills and gross environmental sanitation offences.

Prior to the closure of Alaba International Market, the Lagos State government in the past few weeks, shut down markets for various environmental offences.

So far, thorough assessments have been carried out and the markets have since been re-opened.

Markets which were closed down are Ladipo Market, Agbado Oke-Odo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alayabiagba Market, Alamutu (Ologede) Market and sections of Tejuosho Market.

More reasons concerning the closure of the market was made by Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin who said the authority’s decision to shut down the markets came after several warnings about their non-compliance with the state’s Environmental Protection Laws.

Gbadegesin stated further that despite LAWMA’s several measures to improve the environment, some individuals and markets undermined their efforts by refusing to abide by the laws and regulations.
