Lagos Bans Flogging of Students in Schools

The Lagos State Government has confirmed that corporal punishment, such as flogging, is still banned in public schools. Instead, counseling is used to correct students.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, stated that flogging students for bad behavior is not allowed. He explained that the goal is to prevent injuries, fainting, or even death caused by beating.

He emphasized that counseling helps students understand why they should behave properly. Other minor punishments, like kneeling, picking up dirt, or cutting grass, may be used instead.

Alli-Balogun also pointed out that parents play a major role in shaping children’s behavior. He urged them to be more responsible and spend time guiding their children.

The ban on corporal punishment in Lagos State was introduced in 2022 as part of the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme in school last year.
