Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise has been murdered during an attack that occurred on Wednesday, in his private residence.

This development was disclosed by the country’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph.

In a statement revealed by Joseph, it was discovered that the head of state was wounded by a group of unidentified individuals who attacked Moise’s home at around 1 a.m.

Apart from the president who was assassinated, the statement disclosed that Haiti’s first lady who is receiving treatment at the at moment was also shot.

After calling for calm, the Prime Minister tagged the assassination a “heinous, inhumane and barbaric act”

“The security situation in the country is under the control of the Haitian National Police and the Haitian Armed Forces,” the statement added. “All measures are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the State and to protect the Nation.”

Before the heinous act was committed, Moise’s political history on with the opposition over the terms of his presidency was not smooth.

The issue of when a tenure should begin and end was the bone of contention as Moise stated that his five-year term should end in 2022. Moreover, there are facts to remains that there is a backing by the United States, United Nations and Organization of American States.

Meanwhile, the opposition, after citing a constitutional provision that starts the clock on the term a president is elected, rather than when he takes office, has argued he should have stepped down on February 7 this year.
