Israeli Strikes Yemen’s Sanaa Airport Following Houthi Missile Attack

On May 6, 2025, the Israeli military conducted a significant airstrike on Sanaa International Airport, effectively disabling the facility. This action was in direct response to a Houthi-launched ballistic missile that landed near Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport on May 4, causing injuries and prompting temporary flight suspensions.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the airstrike targeted Houthi-controlled infrastructure at the airport, including the runway and terminal buildings. The IDF stated that the airport was being used to facilitate the transfer of weapons and personnel by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The operation also included strikes on nearby power stations and a cement factory, which the IDF identified as part of the Houthis’ logistical network.

Prior to the strike, the IDF issued warnings urging civilians to evacuate the area surrounding the airport to minimize casualties. Despite these warnings, Houthi-affiliated media reported that the airstrikes resulted in at least three deaths and 35 injuries.

The damage to Sanaa International Airport is extensive, with estimates suggesting repair costs could reach $500 million. The destruction has left thousands of passengers stranded and disrupted humanitarian aid deliveries.

This marks Israel’s first direct attack on Yemen in four months, signaling an escalation in the regional conflict. The Houthi rebels have vowed retaliation, stating that the attacks “will not go unanswered.”
