The coronavirus death toll in UK hospitals has passed 16,000.
The Department of Health said the toll was at 16,060 as of 5pm yesterday.
It is believed the overall UK death toll will be significantly higher when deaths in other areas outside of hospitals are accounted for.
This new figure comes as the Goverment faces a growing backlash over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
There have been suggestions action was not taken as early as it might have been, with Boris Johnson facing criticism for not attending five emergency Cobra meetings about the outbreak earlier this year.
