Nigeria’s U-18 girls have defeated Benin Republic in Accra, Ghana and emerged champions of the IHF Women’s Trophy Africa Zone 3 Phase.
The victory for the girls came after their scintillating performance fan at the Tennis Arena of the Accra Sports Stadium.
Goalkeeper Babatunde Kehinde was named the Most Valuable Player of the Match as coach Shittu Adewunmi’s girls beat Benin Republic, getting a 42-17 victory.
Interestingly, Kehinde is the twin sister of Babatunde Taiwo, who got the MVP in Nigeria’s first match against Liberia.
Nigeria also achieved the feat of winning four matches without losing any game in the competition as they qualified for the IHF Women’s Trophy Continental Phase.
The achievement for Nigeria also went beyond winning IHF Women’s Trophy but Nigeria’s U-18 girls’ team last Thursday also got a comfortable win over hosts Ghana at the Tennis Arena of the Accra Sports Stadium.
They also had another convincing 38-22 victory over Ivory Coast on Friday.
Esther Matthew for Nigeria was voted as the Most Valuable Player of the championship while goalkeeper Precious Samuel was selected by organisers as the Best Goalkeeper of the competition.
In a few months, Nigeria will represent Africa Zone 3 the continental phase of the IHF Trophy Africa phase in a yet-to-be-announced host country.
