Gas Minister Rallies Stakeholders to Boost Domestic LPG Supply

In a renewed push to deepen Nigeria’s domestic gas market, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, held a series of strategic meetings with key players in the gas value chain on Monday, aimed at expanding the availability and affordability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across the country.

At the heart of the discussions was the need to scale up local LPG supply infrastructure, with Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Ltd., NNPC Limited, and two indigenous firms WAGL Energy Ltd. and Nexaspring Gas Ltd. committing to collaborative efforts.

Present at the meetings were EVP, Gas and New Energy of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Lekan Ogunleye, NLNG Managing Director, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, his deputy Olakunle Osobu, WAGL MD, Mohammed Sani Bello, and Nexaspring Gas MD, Mr. Bowale Jolaso.

“We must work together to ensure LPG becomes widely available and affordable for Nigerians. This is key to achieving President Tinubu’s ‘From Gas to Prosperity’ agenda,” Ekpo said.

The two indigenous companies, WAGL and Nexaspring, unveiled plans to invest in LPG storage and supply infrastructure near the NLNG plant in Bonny, Rivers State. The location, officials noted, is strategically chosen to allow direct offtake from NLNG and seamless distribution through the upcoming Bonny-Bodo Road, currently under construction by NLNG.

The minister urged NLNG and NNPC Ltd. to support local content participation by working closely with the two firms to ensure the project’s success and boost Nigeria’s domestic gas utilization.

The move aligns with the federal government’s drive to transition from reliance on imported LPG to locally sourced supply, strengthen energy security, and create new jobs along the gas value chain.
