Gas Explosion Kills Two, Injures Several at Anambra Plumbing Marke
A gas explosion at the Plumbing Market along Uga Street, near the Onitsha Bridge Head Market in Anambra State, has claimed the lives of two people and injured several others.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Friday, sparked chaos in the bustling commercial hub as traders, customers, and pedestrians fled for safety amid the loud blast and ensuing fire.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion happened while a welder was working with metal using carbide, which may have triggered the ignition.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said law enforcement officers had since secured the area to forestall any criminal activity in the aftermath of the explosion.
“Our operatives responded promptly, and efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of lives and property in the area,” Ikenga said.
Emergency responders were seen at the scene shortly after the explosion, evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals. As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the deceased and injured victims have not been released.
Authorities have commenced investigations to determine the exact cause of the explosion and assess the level of damage.
