The  Prime Minister of Ireland Leo Varadkar has finally resigned, after an inconclusive result of the country’s recent general election.

Irish leader Leo Varadkar Thursday night promised he will resign, after suffering a crushing defeat in a parliamentary vote.

According to CNN, Varadkar made his intention known through the parliament that he will resign as no clear successor has emerged from the process to lead the country.

Varadkar also stated that, after he tenders his resignation to Irish President Michael D. Higgins he  would stay on as caretaker leader.

On the political history of the country, Ireland had been in political deadlock since general elections on February 8 ended with no single party winning a mandate to govern.

In a new development, newly elected representatives in parliament voted on candidates for the next taoiseach, equivalent to a prime minister on Thursday.

In order to take up the seat, the winner would have needed 80 votes to take the top seat.
