Flood Ravages Lagos, Causes Gridlocks After Heavy Downpour

Lagos, Nigeria | September 9, 2025 – A heavy downpour that began on Monday evening and extended into the early hours of Tuesday caused widespread flooding and severe gridlocks across Lagos, disrupting movement and slowing commercial activities.

The rainfall, which affected both the Mainland and Island, left major areas including Ajah, Victoria Island, Oworonshoki, Oshodi, Sangotedo, and Ikorodu inundated, forcing commuters to endure long hours in traffic.

Many residents reported delays in getting to work as vehicular movement slowed to a crawl. Commercial activities were also hampered, with some traders yet to open shops due to the drizzling weather and flooded streets.

However, roadside hawkers seized the opportunity, selling food and basic items to stranded motorists and passengers stuck in traffic.

The flooding adds to ongoing concerns about Lagos’ vulnerability to heavy rains, poor drainage systems, and the increasing disruption caused by extreme weather patterns.
