Nigeria’s U-20 female team, the Falconets, have beaten Canada 3-1 in Alajuela on Thursday morning getting nine points out of nine in Group C of the ongoing Fifa U-20 Women World Cup.
The triumph for them was beyond a win as they got a good record for themselves World Cup group stage.
The win did not come easy for the Nigerian team as they conceded their first goal of the competition after an error from the goalkeeper Omini Oyono and others.
The Head Coach, Chris Musa, made some comments after the match. He said, “It was great for us to come back from that setback, and also conceding first in the tournament. We showed character and spirit, and that would be huge for us going forward in the competition.”
With so much confidence, the Falconets through Deborah Abiodun, made meaningful contribution in the game after starting for the first time in the tournament.
In the 32nd minute, Onyenezide shot Nigeria ahead, also from the spot, a minute, after Simi Awujo’s dangerous play against Mercy Idoko, as the latter went for a header from Rofiat Imuran’s inswinger, was penalised.
The second half was a different aspect of the match compared to the first. The Falconets were more aggressive with pace and passion to win which gave the ambitious team the third goal from Chioma Olise who was a substitute.
