The Federal Government has introduced a new policy aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in the appointment of Vice Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts in federal tertiary institutions.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the directive, which includes a key stipulation that individuals serving in acting capacities for these roles are now ineligible to apply for the substantive position while still holding the interim appointment.
The policy seeks to create a level playing field for all qualified candidates by eliminating potential undue advantages held by those in acting roles. It mandates that governing councils, management, and relevant stakeholders strictly adhere to the new guidelines.
According to a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Education, this move is designed to promote merit-based appointments and prevent individuals in acting positions from leveraging their roles to influence the outcome of the selection process.
Minister Alausa stated that the policy was approved to address observed patterns of unfair influence in past appointments.
His vision emphasizes quality, equity, and human capital development within the education sector. The government anticipates that this new policy will foster transparency, accountability, and fairness in the appointment process, ultimately strengthening governance and improving the quality of education across federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
