A defamation lawsuit has been filed by Georgian chess icon, Nona Gaprindashvili against Netflix, for portraying incorrectly in the hit series, The Queen’s Gambit.
According to BBC, the lawsuit refers to a sequence in the drama’s final episode which says Gaprindashvili, now 80, had never played competitive chess with men.
On the response of the production company, it said that the claim does not have merit as the document reveals that by 1968, the year in which the episode is set, she had faced at least 59 male players.
The company said it had “only the utmost respect” for Gaprindashvili and her “illustrious career” but that it would “vigorously defend the case”.
The Queen’s Gambit which focuses on a fictional chess player called Beth Harmon, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, is based on the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis.
Meanwhile, it has been recorded that the series was its “biggest limited scripted series ever” after it was released last year.
