Delta Wins 22nd National Sports Festival, Retains Dominance in Nigerian Sports
Abuja, Nigeria – Team Delta State has once again asserted its dominance in Nigerian sports by emerging overall winner of the 22nd National Sports Festival, which concluded on Thursday at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena, Abuja.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially declared the festival closed, commending all participating athletes for showcasing unity, discipline, and competitive spirit throughout the event.
Delta State successfully defended its title with a commanding medal haul of 122 gold, 95 silver, and 105 bronze medals, reaffirming its longstanding tradition of sports excellence.
The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, dedicated the victory to the state’s governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, calling it a fitting tribute to his two-year anniversary in office. He described the triumph as a testament to “smart investment, strategic planning, and good leadership.”
“This win is a reward for the hard work and resilience of our athletes, coaches, and support staff. It also reflects our consistent commitment to sports development,” Oborevwori said.
He extended appreciation to the technical crew, administrators, and the athletes themselves, acknowledging their contributions to the team’s sustained success.
The next edition of the National Sports Festival will be hosted by Enugu State, setting the stage for yet another opportunity to celebrate and develop grassroots sports talent across the nation.
