Defence Minister Vows Protection for Naval Officer in Wike Land Dispute Probe
The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has assured that the Federal Government will protect naval officer A. M. Yerima, who was recently involved in a confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over a disputed parcel of land in Abuja.
Speaking at a press briefing to launch activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the National Defence College, Abuja, on Wednesday, Badaru said the ministry has commenced an investigation into the incident to ascertain the facts.
“At the ministry, and indeed within the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty,” Badaru said. “We are looking into this issue, and we assure everyone that any officer performing lawful duties will be highly protected. We will not allow anything to happen to him so long as he is doing his job—and he is doing his job very well.”
The Defence Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare and professional integrity of the military, emphasizing that no personnel should be intimidated or harassed while executing official responsibilities.
The confrontation between Wike and the naval officer reportedly occurred at a land site in Abuja, prompting public debate and calls for an official inquiry.
